No, I joined Maryton after the Confrontation. I was on Ickford during the Confrontation and drafted fom Ickford to Mary when Ickford paid off.
If I recall, a few of Lincolns ships company were drafted to Marytyon! Mary was a bloody unlucky ship, we ran aground twice within twenty four hours. Towed of the reef, struggled back to Singers, where the skipper got a swift draft chit back to Blighty. Small refit to repair the damage and prepare us for the long, lone haul back to the UK to pay off. At the time, we were the smallest warship ever to steam back to the UK, via the Cape, alone (unaccompanied). We had clearance in just about every port, if required. Ports of call: Penang, Gan, Mombassa, Durban, Capetown, Walrus Bay, Dakar, Gibraltar, Portsmouth. Water rationing was imposed, this was handy as we ended up getting One & One tots, (thanks to the coxswain "JIM SWIFT") then the miserable "Jimmy" Lt MAURICE, the shit, caught on and it was back to two & one! I arrived in Singapore on the 18th December 1965. I arrived back in the UK at HMS Vernon on 18 December 1967. Oh for another 2 year jolly. The lads today moan if they go away for 6 month, poor soles! |
